No More Excuses!
As I write this, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed in myself. Ten years I have been studying Spanish – on again, off again, on again – and yet, I have still not mastered the level of fluency I want. I have no one to blame but myself for this, of course. I go through these waves of being very studious and diligent with my practice to letting it all go and not doing anything. Life gets busy and I get lazy. You see, I don’t need Spanish to do my job (although it would help at times) and I can accomplish everything I need in the day without the language, therefore, I find myself making excuses and not keeping up with it. As the months go by, I feel it all slipping away. At times I find myself thinking, what if….what if I had held onto those flash cards and reviewed the more, what if I attended more conversation tables, what if I had moved abroad…in the end, we all know the what ifs never get us anywhere.
This pattern is a dangerous one. I feel I can safely say, I am not alone in this. I’ve heard so many people say, “I took Spanish in school, but I can’t remember any of it now” or “I used to speak Spanish, but I don’t anymore”. While I can completely relate to these individuals, I do not want to follow in their footsteps. I love the Spanish language very much and I want it to be a part of my everyday life! My college education was not cheap (I have a BS in Spanish language) and I am not willing to continue to pay for an education I am not utilizing. It’s driving me nuts making student loan payments for my degree and I am struggling to hold a conversation with my Hispanic co-worker.
It has now been a year since I last really applied myself to the language and I feel I am ready to start again. I tell myself – this time will be different, this time I will stick to it and follow through. And you know what, I really think it will be. With the help of Rojas Spanish I do feel this time I will accomplish the goals I set for myself so many years ago. I am ready to fully submerge myself into the language. The more I immerse myself in the language, the stronger I become. This immersion comes in the form of taking classes (Thank you Luis!), listening to Spanish music, going to various conversation tables, playing games on my phone (Duolingo is the best), etc. We are so blessed to live in a place that allows for all these options. There is no reason for me not to do this. There is no reason for any of us not to do this. Imagine all the new doors that will open once we can confidently speak to the millions of people who speak Spanish right here in America.
I have no more excuses left. I’m ready!
